PRESS RELEASE

Grassroots groups organize Climate Action Camp against the Trailbreaker tar sands pipeline project
Montréal, July 28th 2010 - From the 7th to the 23rd of August a Climate Action Camp, part of an international movement for climate justice, will take place in Dunham in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, to fight against the implementation of a pumping station that would reverse the flow of the Montreal-Portland pipeline and bring Alberta tar sands oil through Quebec. The local community, which is already largely opposed to the Trailbreaker project, will be joined by groups from across Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, and the United States, broadening the debate about alternatives to society's oil dependency.
"Our objective is to unite in order to act on the root causes of climate change. It is the right time to denounce and block the Trailbreaker project. We question Canadian energy policy-makers that give the green light to Montreal-Pipeline and Enbridge's project to have tar sands oil flow through Quebec. Local communities and ecosystems cannot afford more oil spills, like that in the Gulf of Mexico." says Pierre-Olivier Parent, a Climate Action Camp organizer.
"This gathering concerns all citizens living nearby the pipeline, from Montréal-Est to the American frontier, passing through 14 different municipalities in Montrérégie and the Eastern-Townships. For fifteen days, the event will promote solutions to stop the destructive exploitation of tar sands from Alberta. Everyone interested in protecting our ecosystems from the dangers presented by the pipeline can join the camp to take action with us!" says Cameron Fenton, who will participate in the camp. The climate camp will feature dozens of workshops, activities, and training sessions -- ranging from alternative transportation, to urban agriculture through non-violent direct action -- that will help participants to acquire the tools for social change in their communities.
Activities are scheduled to start on Saturday August 7th. The days from the 14th to the 17th of august will be dedicated to building alliances with the local community, with a mass rally on August 15th. "Convergence days" will take place between August 18th and 22nd, gathering people from all over in order to unite and act to curb runaway climate change.
